Costume Designers to Honor Jean Louis

By Dave McNary

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Academy Award winner Jean Louis has been has been tapped as next year's inductee into the Hall of Fame of the Costume Designers Guild.

The designer, who died in 1997, will be honored at the third annual Costume Designers Guild Awards on March 17 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Louis received 15 Academy Award nominations and won an Oscar for 1956's ``Solid Gold Cadillac.'' Among his creations were the strapless gown worn by Rita Hayworth in ``Gilda,'' the sequined dress worn by Marilyn Monroe when she serenaded President Kennedy, costumes for Doris Day in ``Pillow Talk,'' Lana Turner's chiffon gown in ``Imitation of Life,'' Marlene Dietrich's costumes in ``Montecarlo'' and Joan Crawford's costumes in ``Queen Bee.''

Louis, a Paris native, was head designer at the house of Hattie Carnegie before being named chief designer at Columbia Pictures. Louis later moved to Universal Pictures and was married to Loretta Young.

``He has designed unforgettable glamorous gowns and clothing for Hollywood's most sensuous leading ladies that we have come to love, and we are delighted to honor him,'' said guild president Cliff Chally.

Other Hall of Fame inductees include Adrian, Travis Banton, Edith Head, Dorothy Jeakins, Orry-Kelly, Walter Plunkett and Irene Sharaff.

statue of Marilyn Monroe

The rumour has it that the father of Marilyn

Monroe was an emigrant from Haugesund, Norway

and therefore the famous filmstar had her

roots here. True or not, in line with

Haugesund┬┤s status as Norway┬┤s Film

Festival town, a statue has been put up at

Smedasundet in honour of Marilyn Monroe.
